Cushioned Marathon Socks

“Cushioned” is used as if it meant a thicker sock. It does not, or at least it should not. A sock that is thick all over is hot, slow to dry and takes half a size of volume out of a shoe that was fitted without it.

What we actually knit is terry — loops of yarn standing up off the sole — and we knit it only where the load is: under the ball of the foot and under the heel. Everywhere else stays flat, so the sock breathes, dries, and does not bunch where it would rub.

Even zoned, cushioning takes up room. If your runners were fitted for their shoes in thin socks, a cushioned sock will feel tighter, and on a marathon that matters more than the cushioning does. We will say so, and we will happily quote the ultralight instead if that is the right answer for your group.
